South African referee Victor Gomes has been ranked among the top five match officials by the International Federation of Football Statistics & History.
As reported by The South African website in late December 2022, Gomes was nominated alongside 24 other referees for the Men’s World’s Best Referee 2022 award.

Gomes, 40, finished in fifth place with Polish referee, Szymon Marciniak, who officiated the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and France, declared the winner.

As reported by The South African website, Gomes recently announced his retirement from officiating professional football.
Victor Gomes blew last year’s AFCON final
Gomes took charge of two group stage matches in Qatar.
He was the man with the whistle in France’s 4-1 win over Australia and also did duty in Spain’s shock 2-1 loss to Japan.
Gomes was also the fourth official in the quarter-final between eventual winners Argentina and the Netherlands.

Last year Gomes took charge of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and Egypt.
Meanwhile, the most recent DStv Premiership Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium turned out to be his final assignment at club level.
